RICHARD DESJARDINS SYMPHONIQUE
Richard Desjardins, born in 1948 in Rouyn-Noranda, is one of the most singular and influential voices in contemporary Québec music. A singer-songwriter, filmmaker, and environmental activist, he has established himself over the decades as a profoundly committed artist whose work blends raw poetry, biting humor, social sensitivity, and a clear-eyed view of the world.
His connection to music began in early childhood: his mother introduced him to the piano before he even started school. This first intimate relationship with the instrument shaped his sense of sound, harmony, and artistic expression. After taking part in various regional bands, he first gained broader recognition with the collective Abbittibbi, whose folk-rock energy reflected the soul of Abitibi, the region where he was born and raised.
Desjardins’s solo career quickly became one of the most remarkable on the Québec music scene. Recipient of more than twenty awards, he has written some of the most iconic songs in the repertoire, including Tu m’aimes-tu, Jenny, Quand j’aime une fois j’aime pour toujours, Les Yankees, and Le cœur est un oiseau. His lyrics—always finely crafted—move between tenderness, rebellion, and contemplation, revealing deep humanism and rare emotional sensitivity.
Alongside his musical career, Desjardins has built an important body of documentary work. His films, many co-directed with his longtime collaborator Robert Monderie, confront pressing social and environmental issues: abusive forestry practices, marginalization, and regional inequalities. Several of these documentaries have left a lasting impact on public opinion, demonstrating that his commitment extends far beyond the stage into active citizenship.
A discreet yet essential figure, Richard Desjardins remains above all a free creator, fiercely loyal to his convictions. His body of work—rooted in poetry, social justice, and a profound connection to the land—occupies a unique place in Québec’s cultural landscape. Through both his songs and his films, he has given voice to a region, a people, and a generation, becoming one of the most influential, respected, and admired artists in contemporary Québec.

ORCHESTRE SYMPHONIQUE RÉGIONAL D'ABITIBI-TÉMISCAMINGUE
Founded in 1987 by conductor Jacques Marchand, the Orchestre Symphonique Régional d’Abitibi-Témiscamingue (OSRAT) holds a central place in the cultural landscape of the region. From the very beginning, Marchand—a true pillar of the artistic life of Abitibi and recipient of distinctions such as the CALQ Award for Artistic Creation—instilled in the orchestra an ambitious vision: to offer the public privileged access to symphonic music while showcasing the talent and creative energy of the territory.
Over the decades, OSRAT has shaped a rich and unifying musical identity. Bringing together professional musicians, emerging performers, and a wide range of collaborators, the orchestra has distinguished itself through the quality of its performances, its bold projects, and its ability to foster meaningful artistic encounters. OSRAT travels throughout Abitibi-Témiscamingue to share classical music with the region, contributing to the cultural vitality of every community it touches.
In 2026, the orchestra will return to the Osisko en lumière Westwood stage alongside Richard Desjardins for an exceptional evening celebrating the power of symphonic music and the artist’s deep connection to his birthplace.
